Eastern Oswego County hiking

On Wednesday I went and checked out a couple areas for possible future hikes. First stop was the Amboy 4-H Enviromental Education Center, (map of the center) a 150 acre center with several different trails. I made a loop that was about 1.5 miles total between the trails on both sides of the road it’s on. They even have a schoolbell. Next on the list, the Klondike State Forest, 867 acres, but only one road that runs through it. One marked trail, but there are several unmarked trails I noticed. Lots of trash also, even a powder blue toilet. Lastly, Happy Valley WMA. Almost 9,000 acres of dirt roads, trails, and history. Rumors are the town of Fraicheur died out suddenly from Black Water Fever (aka Malaria). Others say during the Depression the farmers abandoned their land or sold it to NY state cheap. Either way, there’s a lot of area back there. I couldn’t find the cemetery this time, later I figured out I was only about 1/10 of a mile away from it. I did find the old schoolhouse that was burned down in a rumored attempt to get rid of the ghosts. I also located the foundation of an old barn and silo. Like I said, lots of land for a long hike to be done at a later time. Click on the picture below for more pics…
