Snowy Mountain Fire Tower

I picked a nice, sunny day to hike up to the Snowy Mountain Fire Tower. This is a hike of about 7 miles round trip, most of it fairly level till the last mile. When I arrived at the pull-off across from the trail, it was full. I ended up parking off the shoulder of the road…

This trail, like several, has an easy walk through through the woods, to the base of the mountain…

Not much water or even mud on the trail, really no need to stay on the puncheons along the way…

You’ll know you’ve hit the base of the mountain and beginning your climb when you start up a double set of stone steps. A running gag of mine is that these are formed naturally, not man-made…

Most of the trail is either rocks, or rock slabs, but they all have in common one thing, they go up…

But you can get some nice views as you get higher out of the woods…

Eventually you come to the site of the former observers cabin…

There are several trails leading off from this area, I took the one towards the left to the fire tower. A short walk later and I could see the tower through the trees…

A little past the tower I located one of the survey bolts from the late 1800’s….

The only views you can get are from the tower…

I went back to the observers cabin location and now took the trail off to the right. I had heard there was a small ledge there with some more views, and they don’t disappoint…
