Labor Day weekend hikes – Mount Tremper in the Catskills

With the long Labor Day weekend, I headed down to the Catskills and get a few hikes in. I started with Mt Tremper on Saturday, meeting up with Jay from the ADK High Peaks forum…After splashing myself with some Gatorade (because I forgot I’d already loosened the top off the bottle) it was onto the trail to the register…

Soon after registering, we were able to see the blue stone quarry through the trees. There are reports there are rattlesnakes in the quarry, but we did not see or hear any.  We’d check it out later on the hike back down…

The trail itself just keeps going up and up and up. Eventually though I caught sight of the lean-to through the trees…

Took the side trail over to it and checked it out…

Just up the main trail from the lean-to is the spring, but today there was no water coming out of the pipe…

Onward and upward, I began to hope we were near the summit when you could start to see more sunlight through the trees…

Getting really close now that I came across the second lean-to…

And around the next bend, you can make out the tower through the trees…

This one has some stone steps up to the stairs…

The only views were from up on the tower itself, the cab was locked when I was there…

I found this nut on the ground and left it on the steps, in case anyone wants to figure out where it came off the tower…

One other thing I found online before going up was an article and pictures from 1925 that showed a woman chiseling into the rock near the base of the tower…

As far as I could figure, it may have been in this area…

But this area is really overgrown, so it may take some clearing and digging to verify if the carving is still there.
So on the way back down, we found an old road heading into the quarry, this was easier to see on the way down than the way up…

Lots of piles of blue stone just scattered among the trees…

Also a big cliff that’s been cut back. For size comparison, that’s Jay in the lower middle of the picture…

Back near the trailhead I noticed a stump with some walking sticks, not sure how I missed it on the way up…

The parking area itself, when I arrived there was only one other vehicle. Now on the way out, I counted 14 others parked there. Definetly a busy day on Tremper…
